EVENT: Ireland and the EU A Timely Presidency

Image6pm Tues 16 July: On 1 January this year, Ireland marked the 40th anniversary of its accession to the then European Economic Community. This anniversary also coincides with Ireland assuming the Presidency of the EU, for the seventh time.

As one of the Member States most seriously affected by the financial and economic crisis in Europe, Ireland is well-placed to help shape an effective response to the challenges facing the EU today.  These challenges are encapsulated in the theme of Ireland’s Presidency – stability, jobs and growth.

Ambassador White will set out the priorities of Ireland’s Presidency of the EU; report on progress achieved to date; and will look ahead to the remainder of the semester and beyond. In his address Ambassador White will speak about Ireland’s experience of the crisis; its response to it; and how this informs Ireland’s approach to its term at the helm of the EU.

Meet the Ambassador of Ireland to Australia, H.E. Noel White.

Ambassador Noel White has served as an Ambassador to Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Solomon Islands and PNG. He read law at Trinity College, Dublin, before going to the Bar and then entered the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in 1985. Since then, apart from his ambassadorial postings, Ambassador White also served as first secretary and then director to the Permanent mission to the EU, political administrator and head of press and information.
